So, you picked up your rental car and are ready to head on down the highway to enjoy sunny skies and sandy beaches. But, all of a sudden, you see … a Florida SunPass toll booth ahead… what do you do? Well, in Florida, sail on through the SunPass lane.
Here’s the thing, most, if not all car rental companies have an agreement with Florida SunPass. Don’t worry about carrying extra cash to cover those tolls. Take advantage of the SunPass Lanes. It will keep your trip on schedule and you won’t have to carry all of that extra change. First off, you are probably asking, what is Florida SunPass? According to their website, it’s Florida’s Prepaid Toll Program. Since most of the the roads in Flordia are converting to all-electronic tolling it offers a no-hassle way to pay for the tolls without trying to find cash or coins to cover the tolls. I know, you ’re concerned about missing a toll while in a rental car, but most major car rental companies allow you to pay those missed tolls with the credit card on file. So, you are free to travel Florida’s toll roads without having to carry cash or stopping to pay tolls. This keeps you on schedule and allows for faster travel. Use the non-cash lanes and simply follow the signs labeled “SunPass Only”. The tolls will be reconciled by the car rental company and then charged to the credit card you have on file when you rented the car. Here’s an overview of how the fees you would pay work with car rental companies. First, some charge a per day fee. These range from $2.95 to $4.95 plus the actual cost of tolls. Others offer a flat fee per day which covers the cost of tolls. Also, consider the cost per rental period. There can be a maximum the car rental company can charge per week or rental period. If all of this seems confusing, just break it down when you look at the rental agreement. Consider where you will be driving, and the potential amount of tolls you may incur. That can be easily found by using the Florida SunPass toll estimator. Then look at the cost per day and any maximum charges for the rental period.
