If you get an opportunity to explore Orlando … do it. One of the first places you must check out is Old Town. Located in Kissimmee, it’s a step back in time with unique shopping, restaurants, bars, attractions, and rides. Old Town, has quickly become one of my favorite destinations when I visit Orlando.
Old Town has been operating since 1986 and has America’s Longest Running Weekly Car show. It’s a lot of fun when you can time your visit to see these classic cars. Friday night is the Muscle Cars and Saturday night are the Classic Cars.
Here’s what cool about Old Town. It’s a recreation of a classic Florida town featuring historical architecture and distinctive storefronts. Step back to simpler times and walk around this amazing place. It’s centrally located just minutes from Disney, Universal, Sea World, and International Drive. With over 70 shops, restaurants, bars, rides and more located on 18 acres, there is something for everyone. Trust me, you will wander through all of the shops and want to see them again and again. They offer such unique items.
On my first visit, I was blown away at how much fun it was to walk the tree-lined streets. The stores brought me back to my childhood. There are stores that sell just about everything you can think of or want. Model cars, tee-shirts, crystals and so much more. Remember those roadside shops you would visit while on a family road trip? These are very reminiscent of those.
We stepped into the Happy Days arcade and played a few games. I have a reloadable card and use it every time we go back. Don’t want to play games? Then check out the magic show. How about the Ferris Wheel? Or check out the Rootin & Tootin’s Shooting Alley. Or ride one of the many attractions.
Speaking of attractions, they have two that, yours truly, will never ride. But, I had a blast watching others ride the Vomatron and the reverse bungee ride. It was a kick to see who was brave enough to take on the challenge of either ride and then brag about what they had done after it was over.
There is so much to see in Orlando and staying on property, be it Disney or Universal, is awesome. But, take the car (or a rideshare) and head over to Old Town one afternoon. Spend time checking it all out. Have dinner… a snack… and maybe a drink while you listen to a live band. You really won't be disappointed. Let me know your favorite shop and did you get a world-famous hot dog from Nathan’s? (P.S…. I did!)
